Endoscopic Disc Surgery

Endoscopic disc surgery, also known as endoscopic discectomy or endoscopic spine surgery, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat certain types of disc-related spinal problems, particularly herniated discs. It involves the use of an endoscope, a thin tube with a camera and light attached to its tip, to access and treat the affected area of the spine.

Here's an overview of the procedure:

  • Preparation: A small incision is made near the spine, typically less than one centimeter in size. Through this incision, the surgeon inserts the endoscope and guides it to the site of the herniated disc.
    • Insertion of the endoscope: A small incision is made near the spine, typically less than one centimeter in size. Through this incision, the surgeon inserts the endoscope and guides it to the site of the herniated disc.
    • Visualization: The endoscope contains a camera that provides a magnified view of the spine on a monitor. This allows the surgeon to see the structures of the spine and precisely locate the herniated disc.
    • Discectomy: Using specialized instruments inserted through the endoscope or through additional small incisions, the surgeon removes the herniated portion of the disc that is pressing on nearby nerves or causing symptoms such as pain, numbness, or weakness.
    • Closure: Once the disc material has been removed, the incisions are closed with sutures or adhesive strips. In some cases, a small bandage or dressing may be applied over the incision site.
